One final note: These kinds of rates do vary wildly from ecosystem to ecosystem. It’s apples-to-oranges, or at least free-mobile-to-paid-desktop, but Windows 8 hasn’t even reached 14 percent of the market yet. It was released in 2012. And Windows XP, a 13-year-old piece of software, is still installed on almost 24 percent of PCs.

Windows’ identity crisis

Windows has always been the operating system of the people, providing every capability its broad customer base might want. The result is generally messy, but for the most part Microsoft has gotten it right... eventually.

On the surface, Windows 8 and 8.1 seem to follow the same pattern Microsoft has inadvertently fallen into over the years. Windows 98 was a hit. Windows ME added too many moving parts, and Windows XP cleaned them up. Windows 7 restored users’ faith in the wake of Vista, and then Windows 8 departed from convention with a new touch interface that continues to confuse and frustrate desktop users.

Many are heralding Windows 9 as the savior, but there’s no guarantee it will right the ship. The circumstances have fundamentally changed, and Microsoft needs to rethink its philosophy.

Windows 8’s Metro makeover wasn’t driven by user desire, but by a reaction to the rapidly shifting mobile-first OS market. The “One Microsoft” strategy, extending the live tile interface across Windows for the desktop, tablet and smartphone, worked in theory, but in reality it didn’t go far enough in optimizing the mobile experience while simultaneously alienating desktop-based business users.

Windows 8.1 and its forthcoming Update 1 are Microsoft’s way of saying sorry, by once again pandering to the criticism of the masses. The update addresses customer feedback by clumping Windows 8 Metro and desk-top versions together with some quick fixes and the option to switch between interfaces. In so doing, however, Microsoft has compromised any sort of unified design while making the experience even more disjointed.

Microsoft needs to make up its mind. Will it stick with the one OS strategy, or let the desktop and mobile versions of Windows stand on their own?

There are too many platforms and too wide a cross-section of users to make every customer happy, so Microsoft should stop trying. Whether Windows 9 aims to create one truly universal user experience or strike a balance between two, Microsoft must pick a direction and stick to its guns.

Trying to bridge two worlds with one OS has made no one happy.

Microsoft is currently offering its Windows XP users $100, but there's a catch.

Those who are eligible for the latest Microsoft deal can only redeem the store credit if they agree to update to a new Windows 8 computer.

This $100 promotion is part of Microsoft's attempt to get the last remaining Windows XP users off of the old operating system and into the hands of Microsoft's latest PCs. Windows XP currently stands as a 13-year-old Microsoft operating system.

Sunday March 16, 2014 20:55

The real problem (for Microsoft) is not that Windows XP is three generations old, having been succeeded by Vista, Windows 7 and now Windows 8. It's that despite the company's best efforts to bump it off, XP is still the OS on nearly one-third of all Windows computers. And the refusal of users to abandon it is hurting sales of Windows 8.

Windows 95 and 98 did not operate in the protected mode. No, not little, protection against Internet malware.

NT and 2000 used protected mode operations so some security possible.

xp is an upgrade to 2000. Windows XP contains 47 million source lines of code.
Around 5,000 perople work on windows. That's a pretty basic number and really depends on what you define asn Windows.
Windows 7 can be a 64 bit operating system.

Windows 8 simply sucks, you can read below.

Software vendors want to make money, your money, by trying to force downgrade from xp to 7.

Downgrade? Yup. 7 professional purchase required to run xp. :)

7 professional runs on our Toshiba L505D. And therefore, Forth86.

Office 2007 purchased for L505D. That's when we learned that Outlook is not part of Office 2007.

Only a trial version. Microsoft wanted money for Outlook.

That's when we installed Thunderbird.

L505 was underused because such programs as Textbridge pro, Epson Control Panel which run EPSON PERFECTION 1250 scanner, Printscreen 95 V7 ... didn't work on 7.

L505 disk replaced a upgraded to xp by Joey Dias at Office Depot on San Pedro.

Now we get some use out of the L505D testing software and hardware.

Engineer neighbor Nathan is a CAD/CAM software user.

Some CAD/CAM software companies refused to 'upgrade' their software to run under 7, Nathan reports.

No advantage. xp has 8087 support. 32 bits is apparently sufficient.

These CAD/CAM users are IBM customers. And IBM does the software for Lenovo.

Be prepared to spend significant money for downgrade from xp to 7 with new software and hardware purchases with little, if any, improvement.

Ms Sherry Cheng of PCMagic Pro reported that new hardware will run about 10/11 faster older hardware and will not run xp.

The question some commentators are asking is: If the predicted uptick in sales didn’t work after Ivy Bridge/Win8, what’s different this time around?

Well, El Reg has done a deep technical dive into Haswell here and here, but to cut a long story short, the 22nm Tri-Gate chips are touted as offering 50 per cent more battery life for notebooks than Ivy Bridge and double the graphics performance, with power consumption as low as 6W (SDP) – the biggest “generational leap” in Intel’s history.

What that means effectively is over 9 hours of active use battery life and up to 13 days on standby in some models, with wakeup speeds eight times faster than in a four year old machine running a Core i5 processor, Chipzilla said.

A G, not a 6?

G580 shutdown at this point pending load of Norton Antivirus from Comcast.

Driver issues may remain but the Lenovo driver web site has downloads available.

Lenovo laptops are speced by IBM, Keith Cheung told bill.

IBM does software maintenance on Lenovo laptops, bill know from personal experience with Lenovo N600.

Project planning in January.

Wait for Ivy gate

Lots or space left.

Start. My Computer, right click on Properties, Device Manager.

No yellow ? must be present!!!

[Reason Processors is expanded is that it appears the core i3 is a quad core?]

Strategy is to get Ethernet and Wireless drivers installed first so that you can download.

Then work at getting rid of Yellow ? marks.

Antivirus should be the first program loaded.

AVG is used in this tutorial.

Programs loaded on to G580

AVG and YouCam 5 are prompting for money. :(

Good information here.

Especially good post used in this installation.
The problem was solved this way: Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>Energy Management>Change>Modify is high lighted by default>click Next>unchecked Energy Management.

When I returned to the Power Options Properties window, cited above, it was no longer grayed out. I was able to change the settings.
