The disposition resulted in payments totaling approximately $367 million, which included capitalization of the business prior to sale, transaction fees, and funding of operations as the acquirer took control of a business with significant net liabilities. ...

We have no continuing involvement with the Clipper business following disposition.

Losses at Clipper Windpower have widened in spite of a jump in sales as the maker of wind turbines was hit by defective turbine components and a recent slowdown in demand.

United Technologies announced in March that it planned to sell Clipper and other business units in order to raise $3 billion to buy aerospace parts manufacturer Goodrich Corp. The company told analysts that it bought Clipper expecting a federal renewable energy mandate that would generate huge demand for wind power, but there has not been one.

First Wind said it paid the money for a batch of Clipper's 2.5MW Liberty turbines, which were never delivered. It also said Clipper has effectively stopped manufacturing the turbines.

NextEra said that Clipper was in breach of its warranty obligations.

Even before UTC bought Clipper in 2010 for $385 million, the Liberty turbine has faced well-known problems such as faulty gearboxes and cracked blades.

Accusations fly as First Wind fights Clipper for refund.

The dreamers who think we can shift away from fossil fuels overnight simply have no idea of what they are promoting. Nor do they take into consideration the environmental compromises required to manufacture, maintain, install and decommission wind and solar installations.


Software cost is only about 20% at time of deployment. 80% of cost is in maintenance [bug fixing] and enhancement, experience shows.

Wind turbines contain lots of software and electronics, we were told by High Lonesome wind farm engineer Mike.

Wind turbine replacement electronics may prove a problem too? In addition to mechanical problems, of course.

The timing of that PV power can be critical and the grid must have stand-by power ready to go to fill in. Paul Mauldin of Transmission & Distribution World wrote a very insightful article a year ago about the challenges of integrating higher percentages of highly variable generation (solar, wind). He produce a nice graphic of what the power profiles might look like in 2020 for California. People traditionally think mid-afternoon is peak, but it really tends to be skewed towards the evening. Check out his article. We are really going to have to take a good hard look at what powers our grid and how to manage the generation load shift from solar/wind to reliable power as the conditions change. Push these alternative energy sources without addressing these issues and we will feel the growing pains.

1 The bottom line is that even if the permitting agency allows the salvage credit, the total net cost of decommissioning this project today would be $10.4 million ($83,900/turbine). Our analysis quantified the large scrap price and demo cost escalation risk being assumed by the local community. To protect the community, the permitting agency should require a bond of a minimum $100/K per turbine ($12.4 million) to capture demolition cost escalation risk. If the wind developer can convince the bonding company of the high salvage value, then they should be able to negotiate a lower rate for the bond. If they were right, there would be very little price difference for a larger $12+ million bond. Shift the risk to the bonding company. Let the developer and bonding company assume the price risk — not the community.

Big turbines often incorporate rechargeable batteries or ultracapacitors to power their own electrical systems. When those get depleted, the power must come from the grid. This power goes into running equipment such as yaw mechanisms that keep the blades turned into the wind; blade-pitch controls that meter the spinning rotor; aircraft lights and data-collection electronics; oil heaters, pumps, and coolers for the multi-ton gearbox; and hydraulic brakes for locking blades down in high winds.

The company has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation.

Clipper Windpower is a wind turbine manufacturing company founded in 2001 by James G.P. Dehlsen, who also founded Zond in 1980.[1] In December 2010 Clipper Windpower was acquired by United Technologies Corporation. It was sold in 2012 to Platinum Equity LLC.[2] The company has been beset with financial problems resulting from warranty claims.[3]

Gearboxes in wind turbines, more than those in any other application, tend to fail prematurely. In fact, at some wind projects, up to half of all gearboxes fail within a few years.

There are several reasons for this, including the relative newness of the industry, the rapid evolution of turbines to extra-large sizes, poor understanding of turbine loads, and an emerging (and largely unexplained) failure mode in turbine bearings called axial cracking. ...

The target service life of the typical wind turbine is usually about 100 million main-shaft revolutions over 20 years, but most turbines never survive that long without problems. So to boost reliability, turbine manufacturers are working to understand and address the causes of premature failures. The effort is paying off. Data collected by government labs such as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, part of the U.S. Dept. of Energy, Golden, Colo., and Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, confirm gearbox reliability is steadily improving.

ROB BUDNY is a mechanical engineer and expert in wind-turbine design, analysis, certification, operation, and maintenance. He first worked in the aerspace industry for Lockheed-Martin and Northrop Grumman, where he served as a design engineer and stress-and-fatigue analyst. In 2005, Budny joined Clipper Windpower, where he worked until 2013 on gearboxes, gearbox-failure analysis, generators, and pitch and yaw systems.

In September, 2007 Clipper Windpower, based in California, received an Outstanding Research and Development Partnership Award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the design and development of its 2.5 MW Liberty Wind Turbine, one of the largest wind turbines manufactured in the U.S. at the time. The turbine was developed under a partnership with DOE and its National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

The U.S. has relied heavily on tax subsidies and direct government support to move the wind energy forward. Historically, wind energy has benefited from an investment tax credit, especially in California which saw a host of installations of wind turbines in the 1980's. Unfortunately, these turbines never needed to actually generate power in order to receive the credit.
