Senior citizen techie cell phone selection research and decisions.
If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?
You know you are no longer a teenager when the phone rings and you are glad it isn't for you.

Sprint cancelling contract with with semiconductor company which ended Motorola Razr phone service on December 22, 2011 was good. We were paying about $35-40/month for one phone which we did not use very much.
Now we have two Tracfones for a fraction of the cost. Blutooth Photo and audio file transfer is a plus.
Third tracfone purchased for battery and charging system for project to update Embeddded Controller Forth for the 8051 Family to communicate with a PC over Bluetooth.

amr1 amr2 are two voice recordings made on LG 420G cell phone.
These two messages were downloaded to desktop using IOGEAR Bluetooth dongle.
They are in amr format and could not be played.
So Wednesday January 4, 2012 these files were downloade to Toshiba A105 lap which has NCH wavepad master edition.
These two files were read by wavpad and then saved in mp3 format to bill1 and bill2 so now we can easily listen to them with Microsoft player.

Technical MSM exists as well. Most technical writers are paid to promote products or even industries like fracking natural gas.

Do not fear the enemy, for your enemy can only take your life. It is far better that you fear the media, for they will steal your HONOR. That awful power, the public opinion of a nation, is created in America by a horde of ignorant, self-complacent simpletons who failed at ditching and shoemaking and fetched up in journalism on their way to the poorhouse.

Learn an Indispensible Trade and Start of Business
If you're young, this really makes sense, especially if we go about this track by going through an earn-while-you-work apprenticeship in one of the trades like electrician or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). Or, working as a hand on a farm.
This is precisely the advice I give my kids - and like any parent, I'm frustrated that they don't seem to hear very well. Nevertheless, my expectation is that a person who avidly works are the above tasks should rise above those without such plans, regardless of what happens to the national economy. ...

Outstanding reviews of Syma helicopters. LOTS of helicopters for sale at Fry's. Looks fun.
But we decided to invest in Bluetooth/USB dongles instead. These may attract our attention longer than helicopters?
Writing and consulting about how to interface 8051 family microcotrollers with Bluetooth chips using Embedded Controller Forth for the 8051 Family may be more fun and profitable too? And hold our attention, which is at the juvenile level at best, longer than helicopters.
ASUS USB-BT211 Mini Bluetooth v2.1 +EDR dongle purchased for $9.99, after rebate, from Fry's December 27, 2011 comes with 2 mini-USB cds. One for pdf manual and other with utility software.

Work with the IOGEAR Bluetooth USB dongle, LG402G $14.88 cellphone, XP Bluetooth wizard, Lenovo G560 Bluetooth changed way of thinking on how to connect an 8051 to a PC through USB.
Download of two photos of Joey from a LG420G $14.88 cell phone purchased at Walmart to a AMD Phenom 9950 quad-core XP desktop using Bluetooth file transfer resulted in the realization that it would be possible to use wireless to communicate with an 8051 family and get USB communication at the same time.

Ethernet Internet access to G560 established by Joey to try to repair WiFi driver. WiFi card failure is a possibility is an option Joey is considering. Four year warranty, sold to us by Joey, kicks-in in event of hardware failure. G560 has a one battery replacement warranty as well.
Bill is practicing with LG420G camera.
Whoops. Top of Joey's head missing.
Lenovo G560 left with Joey.
If we go to Austin on Thursday - no snow - then we will bring the Toshiba L505D.
Here's the steps to download LG420G pictures using an IOGEAR Bluetooth dongle.
First phone must be paired with computer.
Pairing asks fo a passcode. Bill used 1111 since Motorola Bluetooth H700 uses 0000.
Look in MY DOCUMENTS to find the Bluetooth file transfer wizard.
ShortCut made on desktoop.
Next get into folders on the LG420G, select Pictures, drop to the picture to be send, select Options, then Send, next Bluetooth, then select Ok in the middle button.
Photo will transfer and success message displayed.

Cell phone service for about 15 years was obtained from son's work plan which used Sprint.
We paid son about $35-40/mo for our single phone line.
First phone had an external antenna and bad battery life.
Two children gave us a Motorola Razr several years ago.
Worked much better had long battery life.
Son informed us that Sprint was terminating plan on December 22, 2011.
So we started shopping on Friday Decemeber 9, 2011.
Verizon store on Menaul visited first. Sales lady showed 3 model phones.
Service was for about $29/mo for a single phone and $59 for two phones.
Iphone for $99 was a option but this cost an additional $30/mo.
Next stop was Walmart on Academy.
Our problem was explained to salesman John.
Walmart reps Version, Sprint, T-mobile, .... so it is the best place to start.
John was super-knowledgable about the senior plans.
Version looked about the best
but it requires a two-year contract. Hey, seniors, are you thinking about the future?
John then showed me Tracfone and showed me all the features included with it flip phone.
Tracfone does not require any contract.
John showed me what was included with the phone. Wall and auto battery charger, case, ... All for $14.88.
John mentioned about taxes on these plans.
AT&T was not reped at Walmart so I look up the address and entered into our Garmin Nuvi 1400 GPS and let the Garmin lady voice guide me to 6600 Menaul.
This is Coronado mall.
I asked a security person the location of AT&T phone store. She directed me to a kiosk in mall.
Sales person gave me senior rates
$59.99 is for two phones, I believe.
Salesman was asked about any additional charges. He responded that the $29.99 plan would end-costing about $37/mo and the $59.99 plan about $73/mo if senior recalls correctly.
But this triggered the warning John Gave me in the morning.
Decision made to try the Tracfone.
Saturday trip to Walmart on Academy revealed all flip phone sold so.
John suggested purchasing on at the Walmart on Wyoming and Menal, then returning to have it activated.
Lady who sold phone said she would active it.
But we returned to Academy store. 60 minutes card purchased.
Note phone number written at top of receipt.
Phone activated by John associate since John was on break.
Assistant said that phone would show it number later.
Went home. No phone number.
Returned to Walmart. John, after a bit of work, determined that the phone was not turned off after activation.
LG420b appears to go into a low-power state if no keys are pressed which resembles it powered down.
Power down instructions. See PWR/END.
He turned phone off, then back on. Phone number loaded into phone after it is activated.
Returned home an experimented by calling son once on his land line and second on his cell line.
Wife phone from our land line Tracfone LG420 phone rang and worked.
Tracfone turned off, then phoned from our land line. I left a message on the phone.
We noticed that the phone reported that we had 130 minutes of call time, not just 60.
Took at photo with LG420. Phone appears to have an internet connection to down photos as opposed to USB for Motorola Razr.
Wife cut out
Wife commented that cost per minute appeared high 1988/30 = 66.27 cents/minute. Wrong.
Visited John at Walmart on Academy on Monday December 12, 2011 to ask which plan he used.
First, he explained that this is a 'double minute' phone. And 10 extra minutes are awarded when you buy a phone so for price of phone and 60 minute card purchase we get 30 + 30 + 10 = 130 which showed on the phone we purchased.
1988/130 = 15.29 cents/minute which is still high but not unreasonable.
Sign advertizing $.09/minute senior recalled seeing.
So on Sunday December 11, 2011 we returned to Walmart with digital camera.
Neighbor Nathan was installing a frame in his diesel truck in preparation for December 21, 2011 trip to Duluth, NM.
Nathan brought up fracking in Wyoming, we are participant in New Mexico Gas Company irp. and how it was polluting streams.
Nathan said the Wyoming derives 65% of its revenue from oil and gas. And that Cheney helped with legislation to exempt the 'frackers' from federal pollution laws.
Nathan said he brings is own drinking water when travelling through Wyoming.
Topic then switched to grounding and grounding of electric generators since we bought a 2.2/2.4 kW Harbor Freights generator for $239.
Nathan, an electrical engineer, explained how the white [neutral] wire was broken when he moved into his home. He reported that his home was operating at 240 volts rather than 120. No appliances damaged.
Next door neighbor had a the same problem but lost at TV, microwave and other appliance.
Computer UPS alerted Nathan to problem
Nathan reported he is a enthusiastic of Tracfone. He said he rented a Verizon phone for $100 from a next door neighbor for trip through the east coast.
Nathan said the Tracfone worked. better.
Nathan said rather than buy more time, it may be better to buy and new phone ... with the POSSIBLE disadvantage you lose your old phone number. A disadvantage? :-)
But you have to re-enter your contacts which is tedious, we learned on Sunday December 11, 2011.
Here is what I saw.
Fine print revealed that this is with the 450 minute card, see $79.88 and maybe a double minute phone.
Monday December 12, 2011 John explained about adding extra minutes
Booklet included with phone has a page for each month.
John reports he uses the 120 minute car which, from the above photo costs $29 so 2988/(120 +120 + 20) = 11.492 cents/minute.
He 2000 card costs $39.88 so 3988/440 = 9.06 cents/minute. Not bad.
Here's the hardware included the $14.88 package.
Motorola Razr phone and case seen to right.
Case was purchased separately.
Car and wall chargers included.
Microphone? Have not found documentation on this yet.
John reported that LG420b will work with a bluetooth mic/earphone.
Bluetooth which works with Rzrr tried but did not appear to work.
Razr has voice recognition so place a call with no hands on phone.
Human factor interface, the menus, to the LG420b are far superior to the Razr.
Finding how to change setting on the Razr is a major problem. But the Razr is several years before the Tracfone.
Navigating to voice mail on the Razr is unpleaant for the reason submenu access is required.
Look at the NEAT voicemail feature of the LG420b
